Getting started
Create an account, pick one of your characters, and walk into the starter town. Everything here is what the game does today.

Accounts and characters
- Create an account on the create account page, or from the dialog on the login screen. You can add an email address when you register. It is optional and lets you verify the account and reset a forgotten password.
- Character names use 1 to 32 letters, numbers, underscores or hyphens. Names that imitate staff or the server, and names on the profanity list, are refused, including look-alike spellings. A new password cannot be a common password, your account name or email, or one repeated character. Registration is limited to 15 attempts per hour from one network address.
- An account starts with two free character slots. Empty slots are shown on the character screen, and you can switch characters, log out, or open any window from the menu. Empty slots are shown on the character screen, and you can switch characters, log out, or open any window from the menu.
- Characters, skills and earned items carry on. Kheldra has no seasonal wipes.
- Logged out after 10 minutes out of focus: if the game tab sits in the background for ten minutes, you are logged out to keep the world safe.
Appearance and race
New characters are made in steps on the character screen: Name, Look, Race and Review. The preview shows your character and turns when you drag it, press the arrow buttons, or use the left and right arrow keys. Randomize picks a look and a race for you.
- Look. Pick a body and an outfit colour. Today there is one painted adventurer body and eight outfit colours (Moss green, Azure, Violet, Teal, Crimson, Amber, Rose, Ash grey). More body types, skin tones and hairstyles need new art and are planned. Your look is cosmetic only and other players see it.
- Race. Your race gives a small one-time starting gain when the character is created. It never changes your stats, damage, speed or resistances later, and every race is worth the same.
| Race | Title | One-time starting gain |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Crossroads-born | 500 trading XP, 500 scavenging XP, 2 softwood log, 3 bandage, 4 herb, 4 seed |
| Elf | Leaf-walker | 500 archery XP, 500 forestry XP, 6 feather, 2 softwood log, 8 herb |
| Dwarf | Stone-sworn | 500 mining XP, 500 smithing XP, 3 ore, 8 stone |
| Halfling | Hearth-keeper | 500 farming XP, 500 healing XP, 10 seed, 6 herb, 2 bandage |
| Orc | Iron-blooded | 500 melee XP, 500 defense XP, 2 iron ore, 5 bandage |
The XP is below the amount needed for skill level 2, so no skill level changes. Characters made before races existed count as Human and do not receive the gain. You cannot change race or look after creation yet. The game database on the live site lists each race.
Your first hour
Walk with W A S D or the arrow keys, and hold Shift to run. Click the world to walk to a spot. Your hotbar sits along the bottom of the screen, and keys 1 to 0 trigger the slots. Press J for the quest journal and follow the markers over NPCs: a ! means a quest is available and a ? means you can turn one in.
Controls
This is the main list. Press ? or F1 in game for the live help.
- I character window, C stats, L skills, B spells, K abilities and skills book
- J quest journal, N crafting book, M world map, H achievements and titles, P group finder
- R toggle auto attack, Q target the nearest enemy, F loot all lootable corpses nearby or gather the nearest node, E loot or leave a building
- Enter or / focuses chat. Esc closes only the topmost stacked window; Settings, Map and Shops close all windows. When no window is open, it opens Settings
On a phone
Touch the world and a joystick appears under your thumb. It hides again when you rest your thumb, so the map stays clear. Use the Loot button where the keyboard would press F.
If you die
- Your carried items wait in a corpse pile where you fell. Go back to the pile and recover them; the whole pile is returned to you. Anything left after 30 minutes returns to you automatically, so nothing is destroyed.
- The death screen shows the early-revival price if you do not want to wait. Gold is never taken by the corpse run itself.
- Respawns are protected for 8 seconds so you are not attacked the moment you return.
Safe town and combat
Kheldra Town is protected. A character in PvP combat is combat-tagged for 15 seconds, and a combat-tagged character cannot enter the protected town or log out. The game tells you which PvP zone you are in.
