Getting started and accounts

What is Kheldra?

Kheldra is a browser MMORPG with a persistent world. Your characters, skills and items carry on from one session to the next, and the game has no seasonal wipes. The game is free to play. More: Getting started

Do I need to download anything to play?

No. You play in your browser on the Play page. Keep the tab in focus while you play, because the game logs you out after ten minutes out of focus. More: Getting started

How do I create an account?

Open the create account page, or choose create account from the login dialog, and enter the details it asks for. The game logs you in automatically once the account is made. More: Getting started

Do I need an email address?

No. An email is optional, and you can play without ever giving one. If you add one it lets you verify the account and reset a forgotten password (you can add it later from Settings); without one, a lost password cannot be recovered, so keep it safe. A verification link works for 24 hours and can be used once, and a password reset link works for 30 minutes and can be used once.

Is my email address shown to other players?

No. Your email address is never part of anything other players can see, and your own account settings show only a masked version of it.

What do I do if I forget my password?

Use the forgot password page and enter your email address. The game shows the same message whether or not an account uses that address. Follow the link in the email within 30 minutes to set a new password, and note that setting a new password signs you out everywhere.

Why was I logged out?

The game logs an account out after ten minutes out of focus, to keep the world safe. Every session also ends twelve hours after you log in, so you will need to log in again. More: Getting started

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. On a phone a joystick appears under your thumb when you touch the world, and a Loot button takes the place of the F key. The keyboard list on the controls page does not cover touch controls. More: Keys and controls

Characters and slots

How many characters can I have?

Each account has two free character slots. The character screen shows your available slots, and you can switch characters from the menu. More: Getting started

Does a character keep its progress?

Yes. Characters, skills, spells and items carry on, and there are no seasonal wipes. Dying does not cost XP on live play. More: Skills and attributes

Can I give a companion to another character?

You can release an owned companion or give it to another character of your own choice. A rented companion cannot be released or given away, so return it to Orin instead. More: Companions and rental

What do staff ranks mean for my character?

Staff ranks belong to characters, not accounts. One character on an account can have a rank while another character on the same account has none. Most characters have no rank at all and are regular players. More: Staff

Controls and interface

How do I move my character?

Walk with W, A, S and D or the arrow keys, and hold Shift to run. You can also click the world to walk to a spot. Inside buildings and dungeons the same keys step your character instead. More: Keys and controls

Which keys open the main windows?

C opens stats, L skills, B spells and K the abilities and skills book. I opens your character, J the quest journal, N the crafting book, M the world map and H achievements and titles. P opens the group finder, O the bounty board, U the dungeon book, V friends and G the world grid. Press ? or F1 in game for the live help. More: Keys and controls

What does Escape do?

Escape and the close button close only the topmost stacked window. Settings, Map and Shops close all windows. When no window is open, Escape opens Settings, stops movement, clears your target and turns off auto attack. More: Keys and controls

Why do my keys stop working?

Keys are ignored while you type in the chat box or any other text box. Press Escape to leave the chat input, then try the key again. Most keys also ignore Ctrl, Alt and Meta combinations, so browser shortcuts still work. More: Keys and controls

How do I put a spell or an item on my hotbar?

Drag a spell or an item onto a hotbar slot, or double-click an empty slot to open Abilities. Keys 1 to 0 use the first hotbar, and Shift with 1 to 0 uses the second. Right-click a slot to clear it. More: Keys and controls

How do I track a quest on screen?

Open the quest journal with J and choose Track on screen. Only one quest is tracked at a time, so tracking another quest replaces it, and you can switch between your accepted quests from the tracker. More: Quests and achievements

Skills, attributes and levelling

Does Kheldra have classes?

No. You are not locked into a class. You raise skills by using them, and any character can learn any skill. Item tooltips show Best for Warrior, Archer or Mage labels, which describe a play style and do not restrict you. More: Skills and attributes

How many skills are there?

There are 18 skills. Combat has Melee, Archery and Defense. Magic has Destruction, Restoration, Necromancy and Summoning. Craft and nature has Enchanting and Taming, gathering has Scavenging, Mining and Forestry, and industry has Farming, Smithing, Alchemy and Logistics. Support and economy has Healing and Trading. More: Skills and attributes

How do skills gain experience?

Each skill gains XP from the activity it covers. Fishing and scavenging train Scavenging, each cast of a spell earns XP for that spell and its school skill, and jobs, cooking, deliveries and trade routes train their own skills. More: Skills and attributes

Is there a level cap?

Yes. Skills reach level 1000, spells reach level 500 and your character reaches level 5000. Those caps are very long horizons, not a target every player is expected to reach. More: Skills and attributes

Does gathering get easier when I am new?

Yes. Gather XP has an apprenticeship bonus that fades out by Scavenging level 8, so early levels come faster. Each gathering node also needs a minimum skill and the right tool. More: Gathering and mining

How many attribute points do I earn?

You earn 5 points for every character level you gain, at every level (level 2 is 5 points, level 50 is 245 in total). The Stats window and the Skills page show when you have points to spend. More: Skills and attributes

What do the six attributes do?

Might adds one point of melee power per point, and Agility adds one point of ranged power per point. Vitality adds 8 maximum health per point above 10, and it also adds armor and health regeneration. Intellect adds 3 maximum mana per point above 10, and Spirit adds 2 maximum mana per point plus mana regeneration. More: Skills and attributes

Is Perception useful?

Perception widens how far away gather nodes are listed on the Map tab. The list starts at 4 steps and grows by one step per point. Hover or tap the attribute name in the Stats window to read its tooltip. More: Skills and attributes

How do I spend attribute points?

Press C to open the Stats window. Use +1 or +5 beside an attribute to stage points, then press Confirm to keep them. Cancel clears any points you have staged but not confirmed. More: Skills and attributes

What is a respec, and what does it cost?

A respec refunds every point you have spent, so you can spend them again. It uses a respec token, and you earn tokens at levels 15, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000. A respec paid with gold is not available on this build. More: Skills and attributes

Can I buy respec tokens with real money?

No. The store sells cosmetics and supporter tiers, and it never sells stats, gear, spells, skills or progress. In the current build, respec tokens come only from the character levels listed on the Skills and attributes page. More: Store and supporters

Combat, death and risk

How do I attack?

Press Q to target the nearest enemy, then press R to toggle auto attack. You can also click an enemy or use a hotbar slot. A character cannot gather and fight at the same time. More: Combat

What are dodge and parry?

Enemy melee strikes show a short warning before they land. A dodge has a wide window and a long cooldown, and it avoids the blow. A parry has a tight window and a shorter cooldown, and it blocks the blow and staggers the attacker. Heavy attacks cannot be parried. More: Combat

How do combos work?

Hitting the same target again within 3 seconds builds a combo. Each hit adds 2 percent damage, up to 20 percent at 11 hits. Taking damage or missing the window breaks the chain. A combo changes damage only, and it never gives gold or items. More: Combat

Do I need arrows to use a bow?

Yes. A bow fires arrows from your equipped quiver or from your bag. Arrows stack, and terrain blocks a shot, so check the line before you shoot. More: Combat

What happens when I am knocked down?

You are downed for 60 seconds after a monster kills you, and for 30 seconds after a PvP knockout. While downed you cannot fight, cast, trade or use a portal. When the timer ends, press Check revival to return. More: Combat and risk

How do I come back to life?

When the timer ends, press Check revival. You return with 30 percent of your maximum health, and at least 1 health. You can pay a gold fee to shorten the wait to 5 seconds, and that fee rises with your character level. More: Combat and risk

Where do I respawn?

You return where you fell, unless a hostile monster is within 6 steps. In that case you return at the town hospital at the spawn point. Respawns are protected for 8 seconds, so you cannot be attacked the moment you return. More: Combat and risk

What happens to my items when I die?

Items you were carrying wait in a corpse pile where you fell. Go back and recover them with the short minigame at the pile. Anything still in the pile after 30 minutes returns to you, so nothing is destroyed. More: Getting started

Does my equipment drop when I die?

Equipped gear never drops in a PvP death. Each worn item loses 10 durability when you are downed in PvP, so repair your gear at the forge. More: Combat and risk

Who can loot a kill?

Loot opens in stages. The owner of the kill can loot first. After 2 minutes the owner's party can loot too, and after 5 minutes everyone can. After 10 minutes the loot is gone. Press F to loot every corpse within reach. More: Combat

Does a death cost gold?

Gold never drops in a PvP death, and the corpse run never takes gold. Early revival costs a gold fee, but you only pay it when you choose to. More: Combat and risk

Can I be attacked in Kheldra Town?

No. There is no PvP inside Kheldra Town, so a PvP death there costs nothing. More: Combat and risk

PvP and the protected town

Where can other players attack me?

Players can fight only in the Frontier, which is 12 to 37 steps from the map origin, and in the Lawless Wilds beyond 37 steps. The protected town within 12 steps has no PvP. Both players must have PvP turned on for a fight to happen. More: Combat and risk

How do I turn PvP on?

Use the PvP option in the game. You cannot turn it on inside the protected town, and you can fight 3 seconds after you turn it on. You cannot turn it off during combat. More: Combat and risk

What is the combat tag?

A PvP hit tags both players for 15 seconds. While tagged, you cannot turn PvP off or log out. You also cannot walk or use a portal from the Frontier or the Wilds into the protected town. More: Combat and risk

What does a PvP death cost?

In the protected town nothing drops. In the Frontier, unprotected trade cargo drops. In the Lawless Wilds, every carried item drops except equipped gear, gold and protected items. Protected items include keys, ledgers, portal books and coin pouches, and they never drop anywhere. More: Combat and risk

Are items in my home safe?

Yes. Items in home storage are not carried, so they cannot drop when you die. Nobody can attack from or into a claimed home plot. More: Housing and guilds

Can guild members or party members hurt each other?

No. Guild members cannot attack each other in PvP, and party members cannot hurt one another either. Characters on the same account cannot attack each other. More: Housing and guilds

Why can I not log out during a fight?

A combat tag blocks logout. The tag lasts 15 seconds after the last PvP hit, and any tagged character on the account stops the whole account from logging out. More: Combat and risk

What does the warning at the zone edge mean?

When you step from one zone into a PvP zone, the game shows a one-line warning. It tells you that PvP is possible and that unprotected items or trade cargo drop if you are downed. More: Towns and travel

Which spells does a new character know?

A new character knows Spark and Mend. Spark is a basic damage spell that hits a monster, and Mend heals 20 health. The quest Learn Your First Spell is given by the Spell Trainer. More: Spells

Are there spells I cannot learn?

Yes. Five spells are in the spell list, but no trainer or reward teaches them on this build. They are Frostbind, Stormlance, Battlefield Revive, Grave Command and Soul Bind. More: Spells

What is the range of a spell, and what blocks it?

Spells have a range of 9 steps. Outside a dungeon, the map walls block the line of sight. A spell needs enough mana to cast, and you cannot cast while downed. More: Spells

What does Raise Corpse do?

Raise Corpse brings back a monster you killed as a temporary ally. The monster must still be unlooted, you must be within 9 steps of it, and the corpse must be less than 2.5 minutes old. More: Spells

Does casting spells train anything?

Yes. Each cast gives XP to that spell and to its school skill, and it also gives a little character XP. Spells you use often rise in level. More: Spells

Companions and taming

What is a companion?

A companion is a wild animal that you tame, or one that you rent. Your active companion follows you, and stabled companions wait where they are. More: Companions and rental

How does renting a companion work?

Orin the Stablehand rents companions in 30-minute terms, and you can book up to four terms at a time. Each term costs 10 gold for each point of the species cost, and a rental uses a pet slot. Returning a rental early gives no refund. More: Companions and rental

What happens when a rental ends?

When a term ends, the rented companion is removed. You can extend the rental with the same species, as long as you do not go past four terms ahead. More: Companions and rental

Rules and moderation

Where are the community rules?

The community rules are on the Rules page. Breaking them can lead to a moderator action, such as a mute, a temporary ban or a permanent ban. More: Community rules

More guides and money

Is there a gold cap?

No. An account can hold as much gold as it earns. See Economy and market tips.

Can I gift items or gold to a new player?

Yes. New accounts have no trade lock, so friends can gift a new player anything.

Can I fish in any lake or river?

Yes. Every water body has at least one fishing spot on its shore. See Fishing in every water body.

When is my home or guild land reclaimed?

Homes follow the 120-day inactivity rule. Active guild plots are never reclaimed for inactivity. If a guild disbands, its plot and contents are held for 30 days, then moved to owner-recoverable storage.

How do I get through a maze?

Current built instanced layouts are mazes, not approved dungeons. In a maze, clear the combat rooms, solve the puzzle, beat the boss, then reach the exit. Press F to loot.

How often does the world boss appear?

About every four hours by default. See World boss and respawns.

Enchanting, tools and durability

How do I open the enchanting window?

Press J, or use the Enchanting button on the dock. The window lists the gear you wear that can take an enchant, and carried pieces too. A carried piece is equipped first, and the piece it replaces goes back to your pack. More: Crafting

Which gear can be enchanted, and what do the enchants do?

Three kinds. Keen Edge goes on a melee weapon, Far Sight on a bow or crossbow, and Warding on a shield or an armour piece. Each worn slot takes one enchant. The bonus grows with the tier and is reduced as the piece wears. More: Crafting

What are the enchanting tiers, and what does each cost?

There are five tiers, shown as I to V. Tier I (Minor) needs enchanting level 5 and 10 gold. Tier II (Lesser) needs level 15 and 40 gold. Tier III (Standard) needs level 30 and 90 gold. Tier IV (Greater) needs level 50 and 160 gold. Tier V (Superior) needs level 70 and 250 gold. Materials rise with the tier: mana tincture and salt at tier I, crystal ore from tier II, binding ink from tier III, and a soul shard at tier V. Tiers III to V also use one to three catalysts: ember ash for Keen Edge, frost shard for Far Sight, or grave dust for Warding. More: Crafting

What is my chance of success?

The base chance is 75 percent at tier I, 70 at tier II, 65 at tier III, 60 at tier IV and 55 at tier V, counted from the enchanting level that tier needs. Apartments, roads and quests

Rent an apartment at the lodging desk in an open settlement. It costs 250 gold for 30 days. Renewing costs 250 gold again and adds 30 days to the end of your lease. What furniture can I put in my apartment?

An apartment has 8 furnishing slots, one piece per slot. There are 11 templates: bed, table, chair, shelf, cabinet, chest, lamp, banner, rug, desk and wardrobe. You craft furniture at a workshop from carpentry (forestry) or tailoring (farming) recipes, from level 2 to 40. Placing furniture needs an active lease, so renew first. More: Housing and guilds

Yes, on Map 1. Stone roads run between the settlements and the four gates of Kheldra Town, and dirt tracks lead to dungeon and maze entrances and to resource areas. Signposts stand at junctions.
