Portals and town books
A portal book is a single-use item that takes you to a town square in one step. This page covers the two books, where to buy them, the cooldown they share with other portals, and when a portal will not work.

The two books
| Book | Price | Where it takes you |
|---|---|---|
| Portal Book · Kheldra Town | 30 gold | The Kheldra Town Square |
| Town Portal Book · Nearest Town | 45 gold | The square of the town closest to you |
Kheldra Town is the only town a portal book can reach at the moment, so the nearest-town book also takes you there. Each book is used up on use.
Buying and selling books
- The Travel Broker sells both books. He stands beside the Town Square, at map position (-0.5, 2.5). Open the Travel Broker's shop and buy the book.
- The Travel Broker buys a book back for 1 gold.
- Books are protected. A book never drops when you die in PvP. See Combat and risk.
Using a book
- Use the book from your inventory. You arrive on the Town Square, and the book is used up.
- After any portal, you must wait 30 seconds before the next one. The same cooldown covers portal books, waystones and the Town Portal spell.
- A refused portal uses no book and moves you nowhere.
When a portal is refused
A portal book will not work if any of these are true:
- You are mounted, or riding a vehicle. Dismount first.
- You are on a ferry ride.
- You are inside a dungeon.
- You are dead or downed.
- You are on a work assignment, such as a hospital, farm or forge shift.
- The 30-second portal cooldown has not finished.
- You have no book of that kind in your inventory.
- You are combat-tagged and the portal would take you from the Frontier or the Lawless Wilds into protected town. The tag lasts 15 seconds after a PvP hit.
The Portal spell
The Town Portal spell (Summoning level 25, from the Spell Trainer) lands you on the Town Square, the same as the books. It is refused while you are mounted, on a ferry, in a dungeon, or combat-tagged outside protected town, and it shares the 30-second portal cooldown. See Spells.
