Spells
Spells cost mana and train a school skill. You learn most of them from the Spell Trainer, then cast them from the hotbar. This page lists every spell in the game, what it costs to learn, and how casting works.

Learning spells
The Spell Trainer stands at map position (12.2, -14.3), outside the protected town, so PvP is possible there (see Combat and risk). Stand within 2.5 steps to learn a spell. Before you can learn a spell:
- Your school skill must be at least the spell's level. Spells are grouped by school, such as Destruction or Restoration.
- You must not be dead, on an assignment, mounted or riding a vehicle, inside a dungeon or inside a building.
- You must have the gold. Learning is paid to the trainer, and you cannot learn a spell you already know.
Learning a spell costs 5 gold per spell level for damage, heal, raise, summon and portal spells. Utility spells (armor, heal over time, speed, shield, slow and cleanse) cost 8 gold per spell level, between 20 and 120 gold.
New characters know Spark and Mend. The quest Learn Your First Spell is given by the Spell Trainer and pays 6 gold.
Spells you can learn
Power is the base damage or healing before the school bonus. Damage, shield and heal over time grow by 2 percent for each school level above the spell's level, up to 150 percent more.

Spells with no way to learn them yet
Five spells are in the spell list, but no part of the game teaches them. The Spell Trainer does not sell them, and no drop or reward grants them. You cannot learn these five on this build:
- Frostbind (Destruction, level 18, 18 mana): roots a monster for 3 seconds.
- Stormlance (Destruction, level 35, 30 mana): damage 65.
- Battlefield Revive (Restoration, level 30, 45 mana): revives a downed character to 40 health.
- Grave Command (Necromancy, level 20, 12 mana): orders your active summon to attack a monster.
- Soul Bind (Necromancy, level 45, 40 mana): a 30-second buff on a character.
Casting from the hotbar
- Choose a spell in the Abilities window (press K, or the Abilities button), then drag it onto a hotbar slot or double-click an empty slot. Right-click a slot to clear it.
- Hotbar 1 uses the keys 1 to 0. Hotbar 2 uses Shift with 1 to 0.
- Mend and Greater Mend always heal you from the hotbar. Barkskin, Regrowth, Windstep, Ward, Cleanse and Summon Wisp always act on you. Town Portal always goes to the town.
- Damage, slow and control spells use the monster you have selected. Raise Corpse needs the monster corpse selected.
- Range is 9 steps. Outside a dungeon, the map's walls block the line of sight.
- A spell needs enough mana. The cast is refused when mana is short.
- You cannot cast while downed.
Cooldowns
Spells are cast on the same rhythm as a bow shot: one cast every 1.3 seconds. Basic spells add no delay of their own, so a spell is as quick to use as an arrow.
The only longer timer is the Town Portal spell, which shares the 30-second portal cooldown with the portal books and waystones (see Portals and town books).
The hotbar shows each spell's mana cost and cooldown when you hover over it.
Raising, summoning and healing
- Raise Corpse works only on a monster you killed. The monster must still be unlooted, you must be within 9 steps of it, and the kill must be recent enough.
- Summon Wisp gives you one wisp at a time. It lasts 120 seconds, and you cannot summon while one is active.
- A spell that targets another player needs you both in the same place: both outside a dungeon, or both in the same dungeon run.
Experience from casting
Each cast gives XP to that spell and to its school skill, equal to 1.5 times its mana cost (up to 600), and 2 XP to your character. Spells level from that XP, so a spell you use often rises too.
