Companions and rental
A companion is a wild animal you tame or rent. You keep one companion active and can stable others, up to your slot count. When you do not want to tame a species, Orin the Stablehand rents you one by the half hour.

Taming a companion
Taming is done at the companion's spot on the map, and it needs the Taming skill at the species' level:
- Species with a cost of 1 or 2 need Taming level 1.
- Species with a cost of 3 or 4 need Taming level 10.
- Species with a cost of 5 or 6 need Taming level 25.
- Species with a cost of 7 or more need Taming level 40.
- Timber Wolf needs Taming level 20, and Grey Bear needs Taming level 35.
Stand within 1.5 steps of the spot. Taming uses up the species' cost in its food, which is seed, herb, ore or bandage depending on the species. You need a free pet slot.
Pet slots, hunger and mood
- You start with one slot. Reaching Taming level 50 adds a second, and Taming level 100 adds a third.
- The active companion follows you. Stabled companions stay where they are and do not get hungry.
- An active companion gets one point of hunger every five minutes. Feeding it lowers hunger.
- An active companion at full hunger can turn rabid. Each roll has an 8 percent chance, and a roll happens every 30 seconds.
- You can release your active companion, or give it to another character.
Renting from Orin
Orin the Stablehand stands at map position (2, 2), in Kheldra Town. The Taming page shows his board. Stand within 3 steps of Orin to rent or extend.
- A rental runs in 30-minute terms. You can rent one to four terms at a time.
- The fee is 10 gold for each point of the species' cost, per term. A cost 2 species is 20 gold a term.
- A rental takes a pet slot and becomes your active companion. Your previous active companion is stabled.
- You can hold one rental at a time. Extending needs the same species.
- A rental can never have more than four terms (two hours) left at once. Extending is refused when it would go past that.
- When a term ends, the rented companion is removed. The game does this on its timer, or on your next rental action.
- Returning a rental early gives no refund.
- A rented companion cannot be released or gifted. Return it to Orin instead.
